For almost the whole history of life, the sun was the only clock. We carry a dedicated light sensor in the eye for exactly that job — discovered only about two decades ago.
The eye does more than vision. Intrinsically photosensitive retinal ganglion cells containing melanopsin respond directly to light and send ambient-light information to the circadian clock. This non-visual circuit was characterized in the early 2000s.

Daylight helps set the internal clock, while a dim evening preserves the contrast. Indoor light, however 'bright' it feels, is far weaker than outdoor daylight.
Three things matter together: indoor light is far weaker than daylight; exposure timing changes the direction of the circadian response; and blue-filtering glasses have weaker evidence than reducing evening light intensity.
An ordinary room is typically a few hundred lux, while outdoor daylight can be orders of magnitude brighter. Expert consensus recommends at least 250 lux melanopic EDI at the eye during daytime.

The timing of light changes the circadian response. In a controlled study, reading from a light-emitting e-reader before bed, compared with a printed book, delayed the circadian clock and reduced melatonin.
The other sideLaboratory conditions can overstate the effect of an ordinary screen, and sensitivity varies widely. The direction is well supported; everyday magnitude is not universal.

We inverted our light diet: dim days indoors, bright evenings under bulbs and screens. The problem isn't one blue screen — it's the collapse of the contrast between day and night.
Indoor life reduces the daytime light signal, while electric lighting extends it into the evening. The circadian system responds to intensity and timing, so the issue cannot be reduced to one screen or the color blue; the whole light environment matters.
Do not buy glasses for this promise. When practical for you, get outside into daylight after waking, and in the evening lower the light level in your home, not just its colour.

Bright-light therapy is a treatment, not a generic wellness gadget. In bipolar disorder it is used with supervision and monitoring for mood switching: small meta-analyses have not shown a clear increase in manic switching, but estimates are imprecise.
Do not stare at the sun or an intense source to 'get a dose.' Ambient light reaches the circadian system without direct staring, and looking at the sun can damage the retina.
If you have eye disease or use photosensitizing treatment, light therapy needs medical evaluation and monitoring. Safety evidence in these groups is more limited than in healthy unmedicated adults.
